Artist Bio

Courtney was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. She graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, with Honors, with a degree in American Studies. Courtney continued her education at Johns Hopkins University in its Masters program in Communication. Courtney spent her professional career in marketing and communications, holding various leadership positions in sales, and ultimately developed a niche practice of corporate communications for non-profit organizations. It was in this capacity where Courtney discovered her passion for art.

In 2009, while developing a corporate communications strategy for a client, Courtney experienced a writer’s block and, on the advice of an artist friend, began to work in watercolor, mixed media, and collages to unblock it. Transformation occurred: but not in the way Courtney expected. She discovered that her art did not bring her back to her writing; she discovered that her writing brought her to art.  Courtney’s newfound use of color, texture, and composition replaced letters and words. It became a new way for Courtney to communicate and tell stories.

Currently, Courtney’s inspiration, process, and unique voice creates a visual narrative that transcends the confines of language. I am inspired by all kinds of light, natural and artificial, and its varying values which often evokes a shift in emotion; an experience that I have a deep desire to communicate. Visually, this inspiration translates into multi-sensory art that tells a story. By using color, texture, and line for narrative, the story becomes a kaleidoscope rather than a linear progression.

Courtney is represented as an Artist Member of the Artist Association of Nantucket (AAN), Agora Gallery, Chelsea, NYC, and PAKS Gallery, Vienna, Austria. Courtney resides in Baltimore with her husband, Cliff, three children, Grace, Mac, and Caroline, and Sully, their golden retriever.
